Newfisms: Newfoundland to English Translations
I hinted on Instagram a while back that I was creating a list of unique Newfoundland phrases to share with you. With some friends coming to visit this summer, I thought it was a good time to put this out there. Hopefully they start studying, soon!
Yes B'y: agreement or exclamation. (Gender neutral)
Whaddya at?: what are you doing?
BEST KIND: OF BEST QUALITY. CAN DESCRIBE A PERSON OR AN OBJECT.
"HE IS BEST KIND."
Prog: food.
Flatout: busy or hectic.
Cracked: crazy, out of control.
"Girl, you're cracked!"
Sacred: soaking wet.
Sooky: unhappy, solemn.
Chinched: stuffed. Full of food. (also the name of a bistro in town)
"I'm completely chinched after seven courses at Raymond's."
Long may your big jib draw: a good wish for the future.
Rotted: pissed off or feeling hungover.
"I was out ALL NIGHT AT O'REILEY'S and now i'm just ROTTED."
I dies at you: you're funny.
Some day on clothes: a beautiful day. One so nice you can hang your clothes out on the line to dry.
Stunned as me arse: act of stupidity.
"These drivers are stunned as me arse."
Crooked as sin: cranky.
